Composting class will teach how to manage food waste

BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. — Local residents can learn to reduce their trash size and smell, improve the health of their lawns and gardens, and save money through a backyard composting class, “Composting 101: Managing Food Wastes on a Home Scale,” at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 21 at the Rockingham Library.

Cat Buxton’s enthusiastic and simple approach will help demystify the processes of composting. She’ll cover the spectrum of practical compost options, compost ingredients, bins and styles, the conflicting lists of compost do’s and don’ts, and the role of compost in managing soil health. the workshop will include an engaging powerpoint and a question-and-answer session. Attendance is free to the public, with the help of sponsorship from the Greater Upper Valley Solid Waste Management District (GUVSWMD) and Southern Windsor / Windham Counties Solid Waste Management District (SWWCSWMD).

Soil Saver compost bins will be available for $35 to class participants, one per household. Sure-Close kitchen pails will also be available for $5.
