NEWPORT — The Reprisal Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution presented two awards at the June meeting.
Sunapee Middle School eighth-grader Molly Reed was selected as the chapter level winner for the DAR American History Essay contest. Molly read her essay to the chapter members in the Little Red Schoolhouse. Coincidentally, her mother, Meagan Reed, was also selected as the Reprisal Chapter essay contest winner, about 20 years prior. Molly attended the meeting with her mother, Meagan, father, Jeff and sister, Emma.
Reprisal Chapter member Patricia McCabe of Lempster was awarded the DAR Historic Preservation Award. Chairman Pamela Lee and Chapter Regent Lorie Greenwood presented her with a certificate and pin for this award. McCabe, a former history teacher, is the great-granddaughter of sculptor Cyrus Dallin, who sculpted, among other things, the statue of Paul Revere on his horse that is on display in Boston near the Old North Church. McCabe inherited, transcribed, and archived approximately 225 letters written by Dallin when he was living and studying in Boston between 1880 and 1886. She also transcribed three journals and the speeches written by Dallin’s wife, Vittoria Colonna Dallin, McCabe’s great-grandmother. Vittoria went with Dallin twice to Paris and her journals paint a fascinating picture of Paris at the turn on the century.
McCabe has also worked with the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum in Arlington, MA, and hopes to publish her materials through the Museum. She has donated some Dallin pieces to the Museum, and supports their annual appeal. For her work in preserving, transcribing, and archiving these historical documents, she was awarded the DAR Historic Preservation Recognition Award.
