CLAREMONT — Super Street king Aaron Fellows won his third race of the summer Friday at Claremont Speedway. Ditto for Wild Cat star Josh Rondeau, who topped the four-holer’s 40-lap main event.
Street Stock hot shoe Bryan Town moved to the top of his division’s points parade, but the hometown racer again saw defeat jump from the mouth of victory as, for the second week in a row, he was punted from the lead with the checkered flag almost in his hand.
Dave Greenslit has led only three of the past 75 Street Stock feature laps at the Thrasher Road speedplant, one a week ago and two on Friday night. Both times, though, he’s won the race, as late-race misfortune again found Town on Friday.
Chris Colburn led the early laps of the Street Stock 25-lapper, staged a classic mid-race battle with Joe Tetreault and then held the point until Town darted low through the west end of the track and took the lead with two to go. As a week earlier, Greenslit wasn’t far behind.
And, like a week earlier, Town’s bid for win number two this summer was again thwarted, this time as he was sent looping down the front stretch, with Greenslit – completely uninvolved in Town’s demise – again riding the SS Opportunity to victory lane.
Lenny Silver, taking the checkers in Greenslit’s shadow, earned his third deuce finish of the young season, with Tetreault capturing the third-place hardware for his solid night’s work. Briana Akusis, fresh of her first-ever heat race win, claimed the four-spot, and Town moved to the top of the point’s parade by coming home fifth.
Hometown star Joe Brown dominated the first 21 go-rounds of the Super Street 40-lapper, losing a monstrous lead to a lap-22 caution, then holding the point through two more slow-downs before opening the door ever so little on lap 27 and watching Aaron Fellows dive low into turn one and take the lead as they hit the backchute.
Once in front, the 11-time track champion simply drove away from the rest of the field, guiding his Richardson Racing rocketship to victory by a country mile. Brown, though, had lots of muscle of his own, out-dueling Dylan Bodreau to sail home second.
Bodreau’s third-place run moved him five points closer to the top of his division. Hayden Scott was fourth on the night, and two-time 2018 feature winner Mark McClay came home fifth. Point’s leader Craig Smith earned the six-spot to end the night nine markers ahead of McClay, with Bodreau now only a dozen out of the top spot.
Windsor’s Josh Rondeau started up front in the night’s 40-lap Stewart LaClair Memorial Wild Cat feature and, on this night, the only question was who would finish second.
Matt Gaufin held the deuce until looping in a late-race mushroom cloud of smoke and steam, with dynamite Zach Lynn then moving up to add to his divisional point lead with the night’s runner-up finish. Kodi Sabins was strong in third, Gordon Farnhum claimed the four-spot, and rookie Jon Alden came home fifth.
On Friday, June 15, it’s Racer’s Reunion Night at Claremont Speedway. NEAR, the New England Antique Racers will be in town to join the Super Streets, Street Stocks, and Wild Cats in a full night of high-speed oval track action. Post time is 7 p.m. and in the event of rain, the show moves to Saturday, same time, same place.
