BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. — Nancy Salwen, of The Fear of Singing Breakthrough Program, is offering a weekend singing workshop and retreat for adults, specially designed for “non-singers” who wish they could sing, beginning singers, or anyone who wants to become more confident and expressive with their voice, called “From Fear to Joy: Discover Your Inner Singer.”
This workshop is an opportunity for anyone who wishes they could sing to take the first steps, as well as for people with some singing experience who would like to feel more comfortable and expressive with their voice. Participants will explore their voices in supportive and fun ways, using games, improvisation and accessible songs from around the world. They will also learn singing basics including how to use body and breath to support their voice, basic music theory as it applies to singing, and how to approach songs and sing with expression. Participants will take away useful techniques to help them practice at home after the workshop.
“These workshops are always soul-expanding experiences,” Salwen said in a press release. “When there’s something you think you can’t do, and lo and behold, you find that you’re doing it, and it’s wonderful, it shifts your view of your world. Singing is a deeply moving and innately human activity with the power to bring us together. The non-judgmental atmosphere we create in these workshops allows even “non-singers” to dive in and enjoy sharing their voices — we always have so much fun and the experience is so rich. Nobody is really a ‘non-singer!’”
Salwen is a certified Music Together teacher and a graduate of Music for People’s Musicianship and Leadership program. She is the author book, “Fear of Singing: Learn to Sing Even if You Think You Can’t Carry a Tune!” available in local bookstores and on Amazon. She also teaches singing lessons privately, runs early childhood music programs, and leads music-based team-building workshops.
The workshop and retreat will take place Friday June 29 through Sunday, July 1 at the Stone Church Arts Center in Bellows Falls, Vermont. Registration is required.
