UNITY – The Sugar River Valley Regional Tech Center was recognized Tuesday with a Community Business Award for the students’ work starting plants to be used in the inmate community garden.
Inmates at the Sullivan County Jail grow fresh produce for local food pantries as well as the nursing home and the jail itself. Retiring corrections officer Pete Mahair wanted to make sure the tech center was recognized with the award before he retires at the end of June.
“It’s just a sweet operation,” said Mahair. “All we do is drop off the seeds, then we go back and bring ’em in by truckloads.”
The community garden harvests 12,000 pounds of produce per year.
