NEWPORT — Ten coaching positions at Newport Middle and High School were approved by the Newport School Board at a recent meeting on a 4-1 vote.
Board member Virginia Irwin voted against the package proposed by Athletic Director Jeff Miller because she doesn’t support the stipend structure.
Coaching vacancies remaining open include varsity football, varsity cross-country, Middle School boys’ soccer and Middle School girls’ soccer.
Salaries for Newport coaches are determined on a percentage basis of the base pay for starting Newport teachers, which is $34,363.
William Page, the new varsity boys’ basketball coach, will be paid $4,124 or 12 percent of the starting teacher salary.
Coaches receiving 8 percent or $2,749 include William Thurlow, varsity football assistant; Dennis Borcuk Jr., junior varsity football; Tom Cummings, Middle School football; Heath Edwards, varsity golf and Christy Whipple varsity spirit.
Three coaches will be receiving 7.5 percent or $2,577. They are Steve Christensen, varsity field hockey; Ray Curren, girls’ varsity soccer, and Caleb Edwards, boys’ varsity soccer.
