A group of farms, restaurants and markets are promoting the virtues of eating local in northern and central New Hampshire. Each month from May to November, two seasonal, locally harvested items will be featured.
Local foods are generally fresher, more nutritious, better for the environment, promote diverse land use, and support a vibrant local economy. Kevin Halligan, chef/owner at Laconia’s popular Local Eatery says, “I love using locally grown foods. It would be crazy not to!”
June is seafood and herbs month. July will be seasonal berries and fresh dairy. Special events are planned throughout the summer and fall, and free recipes will be available with each promoted product.
Restaurants working with Harvest of the Month are: The Mountain Club at Loon (Lincoln), The Mountain View Grand (Whitfield), The Eagle Mountain House (Jackson), Tim-Bir Alley (Littleton), The Purple Tomato (Lincoln), and The Local Eatery (Laconia).
Harvest of the Month items will be featured at these area markets: The Root Seller (Lancaster), North Country Marketplace (Colebrook), The Purple Tomato (Lincoln), and Local Foods Plymouth (Plymouth).
Local farms contributing their nutritious and delicious Harvest of the Month items are: Meadowstone Farm (Bethlehem), Mann’s Hill Farm (Littleton), Northern Woods Garden Center (Lancaster), New Earth Organic Farm (Colebrook), Stockwell Farm (Colebrook), White Oak Pond Farm (Holderness), Krebs Farm (Sanbornton) and Brookford Farm (Canterbury).
This pilot project is a cooperative effort of the North Country Resource Conservation & Development Council, the PSU Center for Business and Community Partnerships, the NH Dept. of Agriculture, Markets and Food, and the NH Farm-to-Restaurant Connection. Funding has been provided, in part, by a USDA Rural Business Development Grant and the NH Dept of Agriculture, Markets and Food.
