Pre-K students will have new options with free program

CORNISH — The SAU 100 Cornish School District will offer new options for Pre-Kindergarten students at Cornish Elementary School, beginning this fall with the opening of school, and following the 2018-19 school calendar.

The PreKindergarten instructional program will run from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. with an instructional program that will be play-based and include a daily enrichment period, including music, art, physical education, or library, and will conclude with recess and lunch. PreK students will then have the option of staying at school for afternoon childcare; the PreK childcare session will end at 3 p.m.

The Cornish After-School program will run from 3 to 5:30 p.m.; students in the PreK program will be able to attend this program after their childcare session has concluded for the day. Parents may pick up any time up until 5:30 p.m.

Students in Kindergarten through Grade 4 will also be able to attend the After-School program as well, for a fee. A Homework Club option will be available to students in grades 5-8 until 4:15 p.m.

The morning instructional program is available to Cornish residents at no charge. Those attending the childcare session will pay tuition at the rate of $20 a day, or $100 for a five-day school week; those staying for the After-School program will pay tuition at the rate of $10 a day, or $50 for a four-day school week, according to the ConnectCornish community newsletter.

Children attending the PreKindergarten and childcare program must be 4 years old by Sept. 30 to take part. Unless they are eligible through an IEP, PreKindergarten students must be toilet trained. Parents will need to provide a daily snack and lunch for their PreK child.

The PreKindergarten class size will be limited to a maximum of 8 children. The After-School program will be staffed according to the number and ages of students planning to attend on a regular basis. Parents of PreK students must provide transportation to and from school. Pickup times should match the end-time of the PreK or After-school session their child is attending, either 12:15 p.m., 3 p.m.; or no later than 5:30 p.m.

The first day of school this fall will be Tuesday, Aug. 28. To enroll a child in either the PreK instructional, PreK childcare, or the After-School program, contact administrative assistant Dale Lawrence at (603) 675-5891; program inquiries may also be directed to Principal Jennifer Prileson and to Amy Dressler, director of Student Services.
