White River Junction Post 84 tops Ludlow Post 36 by mercy rule

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt.- Ludlow Post 36 fell behind early, giving up 11 runs in the first three innings, to fall to White River Junction Post 84, 13-3 on Tuesday night in five innings.

WRJ Post 84 scored on a single by Brady Clark and a groundout from Kyle Hamilton that put them up 2-0 after the first inning. In the second inning, Clark, Hamilton, Robert Slocum, Hunter Perkins, and Seth Boyce all contributed with RBIs in the five-run inning for the home squad.

After scoring one in the second, Ludlow scored their two other runs in the top of the third, on a single from Zach Paul that plated Dylan Merrow and Drew Kubisek.

In the bottom third, Post 84 tacked on four more runs. Ryland Richardson had a bases-loaded walk, Perkins had an RBI groundout, Hamilton scored another on a fielder’s choice, and Slocum had an RBI single to knock in fellow Windsor Yellow Jacket, Richardson, to take a commanding lead, 11-3.

Richardson had the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the fifth to reach the mercy rule, on a groundball single to second base.

Zach Paul took the loss for Ludlow Legion, giving up seven runs on eight hits over two innings, while striking out two and walking one. Kubisek pitched the other two innings. He allowed four hits, six runs, two earned, and walked two and struck out one.

Alex Bushway picked up the win on the mound for WRJ Post 84, lasting three innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, while striking out three and walking one. Richardson and Hamilton came on for relief for Post 84. Hamilton pitched an inning, allowing a walk and no hits. Richardson pitched one inning, giving up one hit and striking out three.

At the plate for Post 84, Richardson went 1-2 with 2 RBIs, 2 walks, and 3 runs scored. Hunter Perkins went 3-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs. Brady Clark, Robert Slocum, and Kyle Hamilton all contributed two RBIs in the win.

Ludlow had four different batters with two hits on Tuesday: Kubisek, Merrow, Paul, and Jon Letourneau. Dylan McCarthy contributed an RBI.

Ludlow next travels to Bennington on Thursday, June 28, at 5:30 p.m. to play at Mt. Anthony Union High School.
