Storyteller Simon Brooks at Rockingham library

BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. — On Monday, July 9 at 5 p,m,, the Rockingham Free Public Library will be welcoming Simon Brooks, a Children’s Literacy Foundation (CLiF) storyteller, who will present a fun and entertaining storytelling program for the whole family. After the program, every youth who attends will be able to select two brand new books to keep thanks to a Summer Readers grant from the  Children’s Literacy Foundation (CLiF).

The Rockingham Library is able to provide this program with support from a CLiF grant. CLiF awards Summer Readers grants to organizations serving kids to help prevent the “summer slide” in literacy skills. Research shows that children who don’t read over summer vacation tend to lose literacy skills while children who do read improve their reading abilities. Research also shows that kids who are able to self-select the books they read over the summer experience the same positive impact as if they had attended summer school.

Simon Brooks is a storyteller who began spinning yarns in 1991 for school groups and families at youth hostels in the United Kingdom. In 2003 Simon became a children’s librarian and freelance storyteller in the Upper Valley. Simon likes to investigate, educate & fascinate with story, and he has recorded 3 award winning storytelling CDs and numerous audio books. He is also a published writer, poet and photographer. He has performed for libraries, schools, festivals, and private functions. Simon combines his passion for children’s literature and folklore to create fun programs for both children and adults.  Simon’s repertoire comes mainly from European folk and faerie tales, but he also includes stories from other countries and cultures.

This program is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Rockingham Library at 802-463-4270, email [email protected], or go online to rockinghamlibrary.org.
