Side-splitting Sylvia bounds onto the Stage at the New London Barn Playhouse

NEW LONDON — The 2018 Summer Season and the New London Barn Playhouse wants to take you back to early ’90’s New York City for A. R. Gurney’s howlingly hilarious “Sylvia,” running July 11 – July 15, 7:30 p.m. with Wednesday and Friday matinee performances at 2 p.m. and Sunday performances at 5 p.m.

In this classic Manhattan love story with a twist, suburban Greg and Kate have just moved to the city and are excited to begin the next phase of their life together when one day Greg meets Sylvia, an excitable pup with a brassy personality, walking through Central Park. Greg decides to adopt the cocky canine, much to the chagrin of Kate, and over the following years together Man, Man’s Best Friend and his Wife explore the ups and downs of life, relationships and the bonds we form with our four legged friends.

Starring as the playful pooch Sylvia is former Barnie and returning guest Theresa Kloos*. Kloos, a powerhouse coming off her second one-woman show Reasons to Be Unsuccessful, was most recently seen at the Barn starring in 2016’s “The 39 Steps,” 2015’s “Gypsy,” and “Anything Goes” as a member of the 2009 Acting Intern Company.

Joining her at the leash as Greg is Barn favorite Jeffries Thaiss* who was most recently seen in 2017’s “On Golden Pond.” Jean McCormick*, a Barn newcomer, plays Kate and has been seen in “Mamma Mia!” and “Les Miserables” at Northern Stage, as well as “A Christmas Carol” at Geva Theatre. David Mavricos (“The Macbeths,” Walterhoope; “Dunsinane,” Shakespeare Theatre Company) features as Tom/Phyllis/Leslie.

The Barn is also excited to welcome back Julia Bain (2017 Acting Intern) and Adam Zeph (2016 Acting Intern, Merlyn/Pellinore in “Camelot”) as the female and male understudies, respectively. The Barn is excited to have our very own director of education and artistic associate Josh Feder as director for the show, who previously helmed “Over the Pub” and three Straw Hat Revues at the Barn. Feder, whose direction is supported by original scenic design from Vincent Gunn (“The Merry Wives of Windsor,” The Drilling Company at Bryant Park), brilliant lighting design from Kevin Allinder (master electrician, Northern Stage) and inspired costume design from Whitney Locher+ (“Into the Woods,” NETworks & Roundabout; “Love Never Dies,” Troika), will be bringing us a “Sylvia” that will keep you laughing all the way to the doghouse.

Tickets start at $20 for adults and are available at nlbarn.org/tickets, by phone at 603-526-6710 or at the New London Barn Playhouse box office every day from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
