June 28, 2018
Edwin Johnson, Chair Selectboard
Town of West Windsor
PO Box 6 Brownsville, VT 05037
Dear Mr. Johnson and Selectboard members, I am writing to inform you that the Vermont Board of Libraries has scheduled a geographic naming public hearing for 10:00 a.m. on July 17, 2018 at the Department of Libraries location at 60 Washington Street, Barre, VT.
At that hearing the Board will hear testimony, and make a decision, regarding a petition submitted to the Department of Libraries by Mr. Robert Hutchins to rename the summit of Mount Ascutney as Kaskadenak. The summit is located at the coordinates, Latitude: 43.4436975, Longitude: -72.4546020. Mount Ascutney is located in the towns of Windsor, West Windsor, and Weathersfield, Vermont. We have determined that the petition is in order and have received confirmation from the U.S. Board of Geographic Naming that this feature meets the requirements of a summit.
The Board of Libraries is authorized in 10 VSA §152-154 to name geographic locations in Vermont. Attached to this letter you will find a copy of the statute, along with the Board’s naming policies, a copy of the petition, maps of the location to be named, and other documentation.
In making naming decisions, the Board likes to have either written or oral testimony from the local municipality with an opinion regarding naming proposals for geographic features that lie within town borders. We would appreciate it if your board could take up this matter at your June 25, 2018, Selectboard meeting. Though your Town’s decision is not binding for any official name change, the Board does consider the opinion of the local muncipality. The board also invites representatives from the Town to attend the July 17th hearing.
You may submit your board’s response and/or decision made regarding the town’s response on this naming request via e-mail to [email protected] or by mail to Vermont Department of Libraries, Attention Cherie Yaeger, 60 Washington Street, Suite 2, Barre, VT 05641. Thank you for giving time and attention to this matter. You may contact me at [email protected] / 802-636-0024, with any questions.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely, Cherie Yaeger
