HANOVER — The 37th annual Prouty will take place on July 13 and 14. The two-day athletic event raises funds each year to benefit Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center (NCCC), one of 49 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country, and the only one in northern New England, according to the Prouty’s website.
Fundraising participants — individuals, families and teams — will row, golf, walk, cycle, or complete this year’s 11th annual, 200-mile The Prouty Ultimate, riding through the New England countryside.
The Prouty began in 1982 when four NCCC nurses, inspired by the courage of their patient, Audrey Prouty, committed to cycling 100 miles through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. That first ride raised $4,000. Since then, The Prouty has raised more than $33,000,000, according to information on the Prouty website.
Nearly 90 cents of every dollar raised stays at NCCC to fund cancer research seeking better ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent cancer. The research conducted at NCCC makes a difference in the lives of cancer patients all over the world. Money raised also funds patient supportive services that help ease the way for patients and families struggling with cancer, all according to the website.
The event will take place on Friday and Saturday in Hanover and environs, the home of Dartmouth College, Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine, Dartmouth-Hitchcock, and NCCC.
The Prouty, the signature event of The Friends of Norris Cotton Cancer Center, attracts more than 4,000 participants, and is supported by about 1,100 volunteers and 150 corporate sponsors.
On registration day, July 14, cyclists and walkers may register from 6 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Richmond Middle School (RMS), rowers may register dockside, and golfers may register at Hanover County Club (HCC).
Donations in ongoing support of NCCC are still being accepted. Donations, with checks made out to DH-H/FNCCC, can be mailed to Friends of NCCC, The Prouty Office, One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756.
All donations to the Friends of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center are tax deductible.
