The landowners’ wood

To the Editor,

I read the article about the Town of Unity and their plan to upgrade a two-mile stretch of the Center Road.   The article stated, in order to widen the road it would be necessary to take down about 100 trees. Also, the article said,”while some people have suggested giving the harvested trees to the highway workers – an issue that has not been decided.”

I have to wonder, what is there to decide?   The Town of Unity has a “ right of way” to maintain the highway. However, a right of way is just that, “ the right to pass across another’s land.” When a landowner grants a right of way to anybody, he still retains ownership of his land. He owns anything that grows on any part of the right of way, including trees. Those people who would give the wood to the workers, may mean well, but if I was on the board I would consult the landowners, before I considered their suggestion.
