MANCHESTER, N.H.- Team Police won Friday’s CHaD Battle of the Badges baseball classic, 10-2, over team Fire, with teams combining to raise over $122,000. Over the eight years of the game, the event has raised over half a million dollars. This year, Corey Conroy raised the most money for team Fire, racking up over $3,800 for the kids at CHaD.
In the game, Police got on the board first in the third inning. With the bases loaded, Chris Pieniazek hit a sac-fly to left to put Police ahead. In the top of the fourth, Police’s Kevin Faria knocked in two more runs with a two-out single up the middle to take a 3-0 lead.
Conroy led off the bottom of the fourth with a full-count walk, and was replaced with a pinch runner. Zachary Lobdell, who formerly worked at the Newport Fire Department, then knocked in Conroy’s pinch runner with a base hit, to put a run on the board for team Fire.
“It was great to be first person on base with a walk and knowing the pinch runner was able to come in on the first score was amazing,” said Conroy after the game.
Team Police poured on four more runs over the next two innings to go up 7-1. Team Fire was able to plate a run in the bottom of the eighth on a throwing error, before allowing three more runs in the top of the ninth.
Despite the loss, Conroy of team Fire was extremely appreciative to be a part of the game for the first time. “The experience was amazing,” he said. “To be able to be involved with a fun event that raises so much for CHaD and the kids involved. It was amazing.”
Conroy got to play the eighth inning at first base at Delta Dental Stadium, the home of the Fisher Cats. “It was amazing being on that field and being under the lights in that stadium.”
Team Police took a 5-3 all-time lead in the series after the commanding win.
