NEWPORT — The $80,000 remaining funds to be raised for the Newport Senior Center’s renovation project was reduced last week to $77,000 thanks to the many volunteers of the Newport Rotary Club, which held a Penny Sale recently and part of the proceeds were donated to the Newport Senior Center renovation project.
Larry Eaton and I went to the weekly WednesdayRotary meeting of the Newport to accept their donation. We also had the added pleasure of listening to their guest speaker who spoke about memberships for clubs or organizations and how important it is to let others know what an impact they are having on the community and the world. This has been something we have been discussing ourselves.
The presenter of the check, Bruce Jasper, stated he was not sure if the $3,000 they were donating was a big help or a little help. To us, this is a great help. We know that the volunteers of Newport Rotary spent many hours to prepare such a successful event that we were the benefactors of and the fact they cared enough about the Newport Senior Center to consider us worthy of their hard work is appreciated more than words can describe.
The $77,000 remaining was further reduced to $76,000 when we received notification that we were successful in obtaining a $1,000 grant from the Hope Foundation. Again, we know that this foundation has many volunteers who help to raise money to give back to communities through organizations who are trying to make a difference in the lives of others. We are thankful that they felt our mission was important enough to provide support.
As we continue to make hits to the last $76,000 remaining, we are planning a giant yard sale on Sept. 1st at the Newport Senior Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. We are now accepting donations for this fundraising event.
However, we will not accept books, VHS tapes, cassettes, bedding, shoes or electronics. We ask that all donations be clean and in good working order. If you would like more information or would like to help with the yard sale, call Arnie Hebert at 863-5379 or Larry Eaton at 863-4422.
Listen up! To Mohegan we will go. Yes, we will be rolling our way to Mohegan Sun on Oct. 7th. The cost will be $45 per person for members and non-members will be $50. Price includes round trip transportation, gratuity, meal voucher and gambling coupons.
Seats are limited to 50 people, so reserve your seat as soon as possible by calling 863-4422. Payment is due at time of booking. The bus will leave the NSC at 6 a.m. and stop at Walmart in Claremont at 6:15 a.m. before hitting the highway to fun times.
There are still spaces available for the balance screening from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Aug. 22nd. Although it is not required, we are asking individuals to register prior to Aug. 22nd so that Dartmouth Centers for Aging will know how many therapists to have during the screening.
The balance screening will be followed-up with a Matter of Balance Class from Sept. 12 thru Oct. 31st. This will be a once per week free class to help improve balance and help prevent falls.
