GRANTHAM (AP) — Police in New Hampshire are searching for the person who tried to take a homeowner’s dogs from his yard.

Grantham Police Chief John Parsons tells WMUR-TV the suspect targeted a home in Grantham on Tuesday. Police say the suspect whistled at the pit bulls and shook a bag of dog food in an attempt to lure the dogs.

Police say the suspect drove away from the home after the man got his dogs inside.

Authorities say the suspect’s car was a red Honda Civic with out-of-state plates.

Parsons says there are cases of people stealing pit bulls to use in dog fighting. He says the problem is prevalent in the south.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to report it to their local police department.
