Library and historical society will host summer fundraiser

GRAFTON, Vt. — Enjoy the authentic colonial setting, festive village atmosphere and the home-made goods of town residents at Grafton’s Summer Street Sales Day, a fundraiser set to take place on Sept.1. The event is open to the public and will take place on the Main Street of Grafton, Vermont, in the morning and early afternoon.

Two nonprofit organizations have combined their annual fundraising efforts to create a festive outdoor event to raise money for each of their groups, the Grafton Public Library and the Grafton Historical Society.

The Grafton Historical Society will have a myriad of items for sale, raffle, and auction from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday in front of its museum.  At the same time, the Grafton Public Library will be selling its collection of used books from 9 a.m. to noon. on its library lawn near the bridge on Main Street.

At the museum, early birds can get the best selection of baked goods. Coffee, tea and doughnuts will also will be sold for morning shoppers. Lunch will be offered beginning about 11 a.m.  at the museum and will feature homemade chili, hot dogs and sodas.

As part of the Historical Society sale, large and small pots of Asters and Mums will be sold in various fall colors, as well as an assortment of collectible items from the museum’s collection and those of its members. Among some of the items will be an old clock, old barn wood doors, and 1950s toys and train items.

A silent auction and raffle are scheduled, featuring popular items such as Metropolitan Opera tickets, a handmade quilt, a handcrafted Adirondack chair and table, a Grafton Village Cheese basket, area maple syrup, and gift certificates. The raffle and silent auction close at 3 p.m. Sale of antique and collectible items will not begin until 9 a.m.

The society will open its museum for those who would like to see its historical art exhibition. This display features the artists who lived in Grafton and those who visited it and painted its surrounding landscape and village architecture. The art works will be arranged in chronological order, from a watercolor painting by William Bartholomew from 1899 to the latest works by Grafton artists. Over the past 100 years sculptors, painters, and crafters have found Grafton a good subject for their creativity and often resided here for a period of time.

Admission is free. Funds that are raised from each event will go for the operations of the Public Library and the Grafton Historical Society museum, respectively.
