More attention to rail

To the editor,

New Hampshire lacks a fair approach to the use of rail in transportation. This is why passenger rail on the capitol corridor as an example through Nashua and Manchester is failing and will continue to fail.

Last fall as a part of a pitch to bring amazon to the Granite State, Gov. Chris Sununu flip-flopped on his support for the capitol corridor.

“New Hampshire’s groundbreaking Amazon proposal has demonstrated the need to study potential options.” Sununu said at the time.

There has been no rail progress since then. Anywhere in the state.

New Hampshire owns some strategically valuable rail mileage that could be used to attract business and needed taxbase expansion and good jobs from Concord to Lincoln and all across the North Country going up to Canada and beyond. The historic interchange at Claremont Junction could more than it is.

But rail transportation in New Hampshire is given no attention either from the governor or responsible state agencies like Transportation and Business and Economic Affairs. Rail just isn’t a priority in Concord unless it’s linked to something that is.

New Hampshire could have one of the best rail networks in New England with vibrant freight and passenger rail connections that would build upon the character and essence of the Granite State. But until Concord can demonstrate a fair approach as to what needs to be done and why, there won’t be any rail progress at all.
