LANGDON- Fall Mountain opened its season with a win, looking to head back to the finals for the third straight year, and did so with 3 goals in the span of 3 minutes en-route to a 4-3 home-win vs Laconia.
“We’re young and we don’t have much varsity game experience as a group at this level but once we found our rhythm we clicked perfectly tonight,” said FM head coach Bruce Ferland after the game.
Laconia struck first with a goal from freshman Bailee Laramie as FM couldn’t keep their shape and the spacing close to the visitors. The Wildcats answered right back 30 seconds later, as freshman Avery Stewart hit the back of the net from an assist by Chloe Vogel to knot the game 1-1.
The momentum had swung in favor of the Wildcats, as Zou Utton and Makayle Waysville anchored the back line and began to force the play outside, giving FM much more offensive zone time. That aggressive play resulted in multiple scoring opportunities, as Vogel scored twice in the span of a minute, and then Kyla Eigabroadt blasted one in from just inside the 18 to put FM up 4-1 headed into the break.
I could feel us starting to gel and I think we were all hungry to score and we were all in the correct spot to take advantage of those passes from our midfielders” said Vogel after the game.
Laconia opened the second half with an aggressive attack, which led to a goal off the foot of Nicole Turpin to cut the lead to 4-2 barely two minutes into the half. The Sachems continued their aggressive attacking play as the Wildcats’ Hillary Barry, Erin Brady and midfielder Olivia Dunnigan were in the fray on nearly every play, disrupting the Laconia attack.
Jada Howard was in net for FM and made a great save on a semi-breakaway but the ball squirted loose and was headed toward goal until Utton managed to slide in and safely kick it away, keeping the lead at 4-2 with twenty minutes remaining.
Laconia continued to force play and was pushing 9 players across the midfield line as Dunnigan was all over the field for FM. Laconia managed to slice the lead to a single goal off a direct kick just outside the goal box off the foot of Turpin but that would be all the scoring on the nigh,t as Howard shut the door on the visitors to secure a 4-3 FM win.
“We aren’t in game shape yet but everyone is eager to learn and the conditioning will improve as the season moves ahead,” said Ferland after the game. “We need 80 minutes and sometimes more both physically and mentally every time we step on the field and tonight was a good start”.
