Geyer does not understand Catholicism

To the editor,

The Aug. 23 op/ed piece by Georgie Anne Geyer on the “problems” of the Roman Catholic Church (“Catholic Church’s problems extend far beyond priest abuse”) speak more to her lack of understanding of the mission of Christ’s pilgrim church on earth than her knowledge of its current state of affairs. That mission is to ensure that all people have the opportunity to have life eternal in Heaven. And in order to live up to that mission, the church teaches that there ARE absolutes right and wrong, good and evil. This was the plan laid out by Christ through his apostles.

Geyer’s ramblings about the church’s position on contraception do not acknowledge one of the first beliefs of the faith, that every person has an eternal soul that was made for Heaven. Denying the gift of life, however short, or challenged, or difficult it may be to a soul, may deny that soul the ability to assume its rightful place in Heaven —forever.

As far as the priest abuse scandal is concerned, her spouting of the UN-sanctioned drivel about reproductive “rights” and overpopulation has nothing to do with that issue. Poor screening of candidates that allowed mentally unstable sexual deviants into the priesthood, compounded by mid- and upper-level administrators who covered up for these deviants has nothing to do with the Humane Vitae’s teaching on birth control and self-restraint, and everything to do with how desperately we, “a fallen race,” have need of belief and adherence to the teaching of Christ, instead of a wholesale rejection of it.
