ALSTEAD — James L. Fowle, Sr., 69, a long-time resident of Alstead, New Hampshire, passed away at his home on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018.
Jim, as people knew, was not a man for small talk. Thirty-eight years of being married to someone who was very talkative, had taught him how to be an excellent listener. Life’s journey began for Jim in Brattleboro, Vermont, on June 12, 1949, when he was born the son of Leslie and Phyllis (Wood) Fowle. He proudly served our Nation as a member of the United States Army during Vietnam. He proudly displayed his military accomplishments on his leather vest, which was an open book to anyone willing to read the badges and ask him about his life. Jim was a proud member of the American Legion and a Life Member of the VFW.
When he met his wife, Cecilia “Candy” Jervey, he was working on the Seacoast at King’s Department Store, as a security guard. He was also working for the Seabrook Police Department at that time. Later, after the couple married on Aug. 16, 1980, they moved to Alstead with their growing family and built a home there. Jim was very proud of graduating from Keene State College with a Bachelor’s Degree. He worked for various places across the Monadnock Region, however his passion was in the volunteer work that he was able to do with the Alstead Fire Department, Marlow Fire Department, being a Scout Leader, Stellafane, and as a track official. He also enjoyed the work that he did as a substitute teacher.
He was avid gun collector and terrible hunter, however what he lacked in hunting he made up for in expert napping. Above everything Jim loved his family and was a devoted husband, “Dad” and “Grandpa.”
He is survived by his wife Cecilia “Candy” Fowle, his children: Lynn M. Fowle of Kansas, James L. Fowle, Jr. of Arizona, James F. Jervey and his wife Kristen of Massachusetts, Dawn E. Fowle of Illinois, Daniel J. Fowle of Connecticut and Amanda S. Fowle of Massachusetts; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his siblings: Ronald E. Fowle of Kansas, William Fowle and his wife Kathi of New Hampshire and Christine Chapman and her husband Dan of Vermont; and several nieces, nephews and extended family members. He is also survived by his most treasured, four-legged companion: Sophie May, his black lab. He now joins those that predeceased him: his parents, his sister Geraldine (Gerry) L. Swift, and Angel, his beloved Golden Retriever.
A Funeral Service to honor Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018 at the Third Congregational Church of Alstead, 14 River St., Alstead, New Hampshire at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the Alstead Center Cemetery, Route 12A, Alstead. There will be no public calling hours.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made in Jim’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758817 Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517 or to Stellafane c/o The Springfield Telescope Makers, PO Box 601, Springfield, VT 05156.
