PARRISH, Fla. and CHARLESTOWN — Irene E. Carter, 101, of Parrish, Florida and formerly of Charlestown, New Hampshire passed away on Aug. 29, 2018 at the CRVNA Hospice House in Concord, New Hampshire.
She was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts on May 31, 1917 the daughter of Mary Massey and Arthur Elias. She lived in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Florida.
Irene was a graduate of Bellows Falls High School in the class of 1936.
She moved to New Hampshire in 1946 and worked with her father, Arthur, proprietor of the Elms Hotel in Charlestown until the business was sold in 1967. She had worked for Steamtown USA in Bellows Falls, Vermont for 14 years as operator of the gift shop for A.R.A. Services of Philadelphia. She owned and operated Carter’s Mobil Court in Charlestown from inception until the business sold in 2009.
Irene was a communicant of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Charlestown where she taught Sunday School and served as a vestry member and Senior Warden. In recent years, she attended St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
She is survived by two daughters, Gail Bicknell and Beverly Jensen, both of Leesburg, Florida; over a dozen grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one sister, Anne Sayce of Henniker, New Hampshire.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Willard Davis who died in 1957; her second husband, Stuart Carter who died in 1985; her son, David A. Carter who died in 2018 and a brother, William Elias who died in 2005.
Funeral service will be held at the Charlestown Memorial Chapel, 34 Main St. in Charlestown on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
