The August birthday party was a good-bye to summer

LUDLOW, Vt. — Twenty-one people came out to enjoy a wonderful birthday party and dinner for those born in the month of August. The cool days were a welcome change from the heat wave that had settled over the area, and were a taste of the cool Fall weather to come.

The four birthday people in attendance were: Jamie Farquhar, from Proctorsville, Vermont, and

Betty Demers, Donald Devereux, and Pat Kirkbride, all from Ludlow, Vermont.

After the group sang The Birthday Song to them and gave them a round of applause, the birthday dinner was served.

Dinner was a mound of creamy mashed potato and meatloaf smothered in gravy, with Brussels sprouts. Beverage was coffee, tea, milk or water. Dessert was a slice of strawberry cake covered in white frosting and a side of ice cream.

After dinner the Birthday Raffles started. These raffles are a lot of fun with many prizes. This month the prizes were two dishes of dark chocolate fudge, several envelopes of meal tickets, two lunches of crackers and soup, a tea sampler with five different types of tea, and a host of wrapped mystery gifts.

At the close of the raffles the 50/50 drawing is held. All the winning tickets are put back into the ticket jar and the jar gets a good shake. A winner is drawn and this person goes home with a handful of cash. The August winner was Arthur Tyrrell from Proctorsville, Vermont who went home with $35.

The party is held on the third Thursday of the month. For September the date is Thursday, Sept. 20 at noon. The menu will be stuffed chicken breast, mashed potato, glazed diced beets, wheat roll, and vanilla fluff with pineapple and mandarin oranges.

Mark your calendar now and come to the party at the Black River Valley Senior Center, 10 High St. in Ludlow Vermont. Come early to get a good seat, purchase raffle tickets and meet new friends. You do not have to be from Ludlow to come to the party and if September is your birthday month, your meal is free.
