NEWPORT — Monday was the first Matter of Balance class here at the Newport Senior Center. The interest in this class was so great that an additional class had to be added on Monday’s. The class will now be on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

The interest in the upcoming Mohegan Sun trip was also great. We are proud to announce that the trip is sold out. However, if you are still interested in the trip, please call 863-4422 to be put on the wait list. If someone cancels for any reason, we will refer to the wait list to fill the vacant seat.

We would like to see just as much participation on Sept. 14, when Representative Virginia Irwin and Yvonne Goldsberry, president of Endowment for Health, will be at the center for an informational listening session.

Yvonne would like to learn about the concerns the public has about access to healthcare, isolation, grandparents being parents or any other issues that are important to you. Light refreshments will be available for this listening session to be held 9-10 a.m.

Save the date for Oct. 12 at 10 a.m. The Alzheimer’s Association will be at the center at 10 a.m. to discuss the 10 signs of early detection for Alzheimer’s.

Save the date for Oct 23, if you have ever had worries about forgetfulness and your mental sharpness as you get older. Tammy Astle will be leading a discussion on “Maximizing Brain Function.” Watch for more details on these two new free events at the Newport Senior Center.

Our additional 4,000 square feet of space is quickly being utilized with some great new programs and our regularly scheduled programs that you have come to know and love. We were approached this week by a certified Reiki instructor who would like to provide Reiki services next year when she returns from Florida. If you have a particular topic or program you would like to see at the center, please share your ideas with any of our board members or staff.

We would like to thank of those who donated items for our yard sale that was held last week. With your contributions, we were able to raise an additional $928 towards our renovation project. This was a pretty good amount considering the yard sale was organized in a short amount of time compared to yard sales in the past when we accepted donations for months.

Thank you to all those who stopped by to purchase a sausage grinder at this year’s Apple Pie Festival. We were able to raise more than $1,700 for this first-time adventure. We could not do any of this without the help of our dedicated volunteers who work so hard to ensure that all seniors have a place to go, the Newport Senior Center, and for some, a place they call home.
