To the editor,
Gov. Phil Scott, after reading your post-primary manifesto I can understand why you waited until after the primary, because it amounts to a liberal/progressive plan of action. You have Vermont join U.S. Climate Alliance and created Vermont Climate Action Summit. The GCAS is finance by liberal non-profit organizations to funnel millions of dollars to help Democrat governors promote liberal climate change policies including the Paris Accord, all of which you, Gov. Scott agree with. I wonder if you will be recipient of Gov. Brown’s foundation.
Here’s a flash for you. The climate has been changing since the end of the “Ice Age.” All without the help of mankind. I’m guessing you’re backing the Paris Accord because first, President Trump pulled the U.S. out of it and second, it’s because you believe that people are causing climate change as declared by lib/progs and scientists existing on government grants. President Trump pulled the U.S. out because it obligated the U.S. to pay out billions of dollars to subsidize non-paying pollutors. Such moves on your part ought to garner you some support from the lib/prog group.
Now you want Vermont taxpayers to subsidize the construction of charging stations for electric vehicles. If the real need for the stations existed, then the manufacturers of the vehicles and power companies should, and would invest in the placement of the stations. Vermont taxpayers should not have to finance your liberal give-aways. Were gas stations ever subsidized by the government? Just how many electric vehicles are registered in Vermont? I don’t mean hybrids either. Just subsidizing the purchase of electric vehicles is/was a boon for those who could take advance of tax breaks, meaning that those who because of income count not qualify for teax breaks wind up providing the subsidy. Of course electric vehicles do not pay any gas tax, which means they don’t contribute to the maintaining of the highways. This is becoming a concern in many states. I wonder how the batteries stand up to zero and subzero temperatures?
You mention the vulnerables. Do you care that any time you subsidize a group by allowing a tax credit it’s those that aren’t able to use tax credits that are doing the subsidizing? Another hit that includes the vulnerables is the onerous and expensive vehicle inspection system. You mentioned that it did not happen on your watch. Weren’t you lieutenant governor? Not only is the single source system soaking the vulnerables as well as others, since there’s a charge whether a vehicle passes or not, it is also forcing off the road sericeable vehicles by a very critical inspection that goes beyond the safety factor. Who approved single source system? Did the legislature have a say or was it by bureaucratic decree? Such a system opens a way for corruption. Follow the money? Of course you realize a number of the older one owner garages quit doing inspections because of the mandates and cost of the new system. I know of one that had a wood-burning furnace that quit because he was ordered to get rid of it and get a different heating source. I know of another, younger, that did do the added expense. Should this single source system perhaps be modified? Such as allow competition and eliminate some of the non-safety reasons for forcing a vehicle off the road.
