Donald F. Chamberlain

SUNAPEE and CLAREMONT — Donald F. Chamberlain, 89, of Garnet Street, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018.

He was born in Claremont on Sept. 20, 1929 the son of Aldore and Bertha (Fearon) Chamberlain.

He graduated from Stevens High School in 1947, where he had been the drum major in the band. He started the Tune Twisters dance band and was instrumental in starting the track and field program. He lived in Nutley, New Jersey most of his life until retiring to Sunapee in 1994. Don spent his career as an electronic engineer with ITT in New Jersey. He made jet packs for walking in space and traveled the world erecting the original GPS towers for satellite communication.

He served in the U.S. Air Force. Donald was a former president of the Sunapee Lions Club. He enjoyed sports and started the tennis league at ITT. In his younger days he liked to play baseball and later enjoyed tennis, racquetball and sailing.

He married Joyce Margaret Dougherty in Germany in 1952 while serving in the Air Force and she died in 2003. He is also predeceased by a brother, Henry “Hank,” and a sister, Katherine “Kay” Perron. He is survived by a daughter and her husband, Karlie and Glenn Shaw of Claremont, a granddaughter, Kristin Tutela; nieces and nephews; as well as many neighbors and friends that he considered extra family, who all acted as companions and caregivers.

A service will be held at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main Street, New London on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018 at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Claremont on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Air Force.
