An appeal to Claremont residents

To the editor,

I am writing with a concern regarding a large dead tree on Chestnut Street. This tree has a large hole up the middle of it — I’m not even sure how it’s still standing — and it appears it’s bordering a Claremont resident’s property and state property. I have voiced my concerns several times to city and state public works officials with no appropriate action. City officials indicate it’s a state issue, and the state indicates there will be no action this year, as the tree has a few green leaves on it. My first question is, if the tree is a danger to the public regardless of whose responsibility it is, a city resident’s or the state, why should it wait to be addressed? Why wouldn’t the City of Claremont request the property owner remove it? Or state public works? Shouldn’t the public’s safety be above all? My primary concern would obviously be the safety of motorists traveling Chestnut Street, as there was a fatality a few short years ago in the same area due to a tree falling on motorist passing by. I am left not sure where to turn next, other than my fellow Claremont residents.

A concerned resident,
