Newport Summit looks to gather ideas to help community grow

NEWPORT — Steve Smith is hoping to get a large group of people together on Nov. 13 to talk about ways to help move the community of Newport forward.

He appeared before the Newport Board of Selectmen Monday night and aired his plan for the Newport Summit gathering.

“Our goal is to get all boards, committees, community leaders, business leaders and organizations in the Newport area in one room together to share ideas, connect, discuss items of concerns, learn about what different organizations do and how we can help one another and grow our community spirit,” he said.

“The goal is to pull our resources together and work together. This is open to any group including teachers,” Smith stated.

Newport Town Manger Hunter Rieseberg praised Smith for his interest in promoting the plan,

Smith, a director at the Newport Area of Commerce, said the Summit would be held at the Newport Town Hall starting with a cocktail hour/mixer from 5-6 p.m. with snacks provided by the Newport Area Chamber of Commerce.

At 6 p.m., the business portion of the evening will start. Smith told the selectmen he hopes to make the Summit gathering a once-a-year session. “We won’t be meeting every month,” he revealed.

Smith will host a round table discussion at the business meeting. Each group will have a few minutes to talk about their organization, promote events they have coming up, talk about strengths and areas where help is needed and give their overall state-of-the-union. There will be open discussion during these periods.

The Newport Summit is free and open to all interested parties. “We hope to have a grand turnout with positive results that will move our community forward,” Smith stated.
