ASCUTNEY, Vt. — Summer has ended. Fall is upon us. Ol’ Man Winter is just around the bend. Yikes! There are many rituals that humanity has followed to mark the transition between the seasons. Many of our club members enjoy one last road trip in their favorite ride to mark the impending change.
The Last Leaf tour was held on Saturday, Oct. 6, and I’m sure another narrative will report on the activities of those participants. Some other members marked the end of car show season by participation in the Weathersfield School’s Car Show on the same date.
The “Car Nutz” crew was well represented in this show. Members brought a variety of hot rods and customs. Ron Gilbert of YMMC brought his Dodge pickup and Dick Wood and family was also in attendance!
I brought our little American Austin and we all enjoyed the overcast skies, which served to prevent us all from burning or even sweating. There were some terrific cars among the 80-plus vehicles in the gathering, including a 1914 Model T speedster (which was for sale for a modest $14,500), an immaculate 1956 VW Bug, and an extremely rare 1937 Indian 4 Police Interceptor model! Don Avery’s extraordinary ’57 Chevy convertible was also on display and, even without sunny conditions, looked fabulous!
In addition to the collection of cars on display, there were food concessions with hots and burgers, chips, popcorn and a variety of soft drinks. This event was a fundraiser for the Weathersfield School, and all contributions were appreciated. A 50/50 raffle is also held to supplement the fund raiser.
The cars were great. The camaraderie that was created during the event was palpable and there was great participation in the organizational aspects of the event by the student body of the school. The Ascutney Fire Department brought along one of their pumpers and the general public was allowed to tour the truck. This proved especially popular with the youth. And while it was nice to see there were an abundance of door prizes to be awarded, one might suggest scaling back the quantity of prizes, while increasing the value of the premium, as a way to increase the meaningfulness to the audience.
All in all, a great show, sadly to mark the end of another car season! Dell and I look forward to seeing you all, “on the road, again!”
