“Once again our freshman goalie faced a tremendous challenge with true grit and grace,” said Kearsarge head coach Dianne Chadwick. “Ayla saved 21 shots, and she deserves many accolades for stepping into that goal with the attitude of a champion. Mascoma is a very strong team and despite being capable, we just didn’t make the plays we needed for better forward runs and stronger defensive stops. Chase Lennon (forward), Kate Cochran (midfielder) and Brier Roberts (defense) all had great hustle today and led the charge in effort. We’ll push harder for our final two games of the season.”

BOYS SOCCER
Newport 3, Hinsdale 2
Newport was able to put a lot of pressure from the beginning to keep the ball on Hinsdale’s side. “We were moving the ball very well and passing and moving,” said Newport head coach Caleb Godwin. “Both Ben Gallagher and Cooper Skarin were able to feed the ball to our wings and strikers for shots. During the first half we got a great break away for Joe Boliero (assisted by Ben Gallagher) to make a goal over the keeper. We were able to follow it up with Isaac Lafayette making a great goal assisted by Boliero.” Newport had 11 total shots on goal in just the first half. “It was great seeing all my guys moving the ball around and using our wings, it shows that working hard and going for the ball pays off,” said Godwin. “When the second half started, we started very strong but then we started to slack. Hinsdale found a couple open areas and beat some of our defense back to the ball. Mike Wilkinson and Jarred Meyette played very good defense. They were both able to communicate very well and move the ball to the outsides with the support of Zen Hall and Zack Davis. Garret Harold had a great game as goalie by blocking and preventing a lot of goals.” Newport let up 2 goals in the second half which tied up the game. “We were able to hold off Hinsdale to go into OT. After a quick huddle we were able to get back into the game. We pushed forward and were able to keep the ball on Hinsdale side, our guys made a lot of great plays and passes.” About 5 minutes into OT, Cooper Skarin was able to take a shot from about the 18 yard line to sink one off the top goal post. “Overall these boys played with heart and showed what they can accomplish when the play as a team as work together as one,” said coach Godwin. “I am just happy how far these boys have come and to show what they can do.”
