Eversource lineworkers to compete in Rodeo

MANCHESTER — Eversource lineworkers from the Keene and Newport areas will soon head to Overland Park, Kan., to compete in the International Lineman’s Rodeo.

Lineworkers Luke Bowley (Keene), Bryan Larson (Newport) and Lucas Preiser (Peterborough) will compete as apprentices, while Andrew Greco (Newport), Anthony Magistro (Newport), Jason Miller (Keene) and Daniel Wilkins (Newport) will compete on teams of experienced lineworkers.

Bowley is training at Eversource’s Legends Drive facility in Hooksett.

“The relationships we form and the skills we develop in our training for the rodeo make us stronger lineworkers,” said Miller, who has been training for the global competition since competing at the regional rodeo over the summer.

“The team building aspect is especially valuable because following a significant storm or other emergency, we work alongside crews from throughout the region-and sometimes the country-to be there when our customers need us.”

The rodeo challenges competitors’ skill in a variety of events, including speed climb, rescue and a mystery event. In the speed climb event, a competitor must race to the top of the pole carrying an egg in his or her mouth.

“Speed is important, but technical skill is key,” said Bowley, who was the overall winner among apprentices at the fifth annual regional rodeo.

“Training with our experienced lineworkers has been a great mentorship opportunity. There are always a variety of ways to complete a task. My mentors in this process have taught me how to quickly recognize the most efficient strategy so that I can succeed in the rodeo, and when working to restore power to our customers.”
