Assault on an officer

WESTMINSTER — On Oct. 7 at 4 a.m. an officer with the Bellows Falls Police Department observed an ATV traveling southbound on Route 5 in Westminster while traveling back to the village from assisting another officer. When the ATV passed by the officer it did not have any lights activated. Fearing for the safety of the operator and the safety of other motorists, the officer attempted to stop the ATV. The ATV fled up Cemetery Road in Westminster to the gated trail head. In an attempt to fee the officer the operator of the ATV vigorously rammed through trees and bushed before being stopped by a large log. The officer confronted the operator and gave him commands to stop and show him his hands. However, the operator refused to do so. The officer attempted to take control of the operator and in doing so was assaulted. Once again the operator gained control of the ATV and ran through trees and bushes to get away.

The ATV involved in this incident is described as a yellow 2000s-style Polaris Sportsman. The operator is described as a heavyset male, approximately 6-foot-2-inches, 250 pounds, and is believed to be in his 20s to early 30s. The operator was wearing a brown-colored thick Carhartt-style jacket and a black full face helmet. The operator may have fled towards the area of Route 121 in Saxtons River or Athens.

When apprehended the operator will be charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment, negligent operation, and driving under the influence.

Anyone with any information pertaining to this incident is asked to contact Officer Ian Tuttle at the Bellows Falls Police Department. 802-463-1234 or the tip line at 802-463-2373.
