Man suffers head injury in crash with school bus

NEWPORT — A Dover man suffered a serious head injury when the vehicle he was operating was in collision with a Newport school bus at about 6:34 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 15.

According to Newport Police a 2019 International school bus, operated by the Newport School District and driven by Gail McGirr, 67, was in collision with a 2003 Toyota Corolla operated by Andrew Sheckler, 20, of Dover.

Police said Sheckler was making a left hand turn into LaValley Building Supply on his way to work when the crash occurred. No students were on the bus at the time of the crash.

Sheckler was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was transported by ambulance to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for treatment of his head injury.

Detective Lieutenant Charles Rataj from the Newport Police Department said that although a preliminary investigation was complete, the cause of the crash is still under investigation and was unable to release further details.
