TILTON — Maddie Miller scored a pair of second-half goals to help lift tenth-seeded Newport to a 3-1 upset victory over No. 7 Winnisquam Tuesday in Division III field hockey tournament action.
The Tigers, 8-7 will travel to Hopkinton, 12-2, Friday to face the second-seeded team in a 3 p.m. contest. Hopkinton had a bye in the opening round of action Tuesday.
In their final regular—season game on Friday, Newport dropped a 6-1 decision to Hopkinton. Newport did not play Winnisquam during the regular season.
Winnisquam held a 1-0 lead at halftime Friday when Coach Steve Christensen had a suggestion for his players. “I told the girls it’s one-zip, you’ve been in this position so many times.”
Ten minutes into the second half Miller scored with the assists credited to Eliza Bates and Selena Coronis.
Eight minutes later Miller found the back of the net once again with an assist from Bates and Lacey McNeel. With eight minutes left in the game, McNeel iced the game with a breakaway goal for the Tigers.
Winnisquam had 6 penalty corners to 4 for Newport. Kelsey Wheeler notched 8 saves for her first playoff win.
In other Division III tournament action No. 5 Lebanon shut out No. 12 Stevens in overtime, 1-0, and No. 9 Berlin nipped No. 8 Kearsarge, 2-1.
