Parents, guardians meeting to support LGBTQ+ youth

CLAREMONT — Those raising or supporting LGBTQ+ children of any age are invited to a free brunch hosted by Rural Outright at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 at TLC Family Resource Center, 109 Pleasant St., Claremont.

Research shows LGBTQ+ youth are at greater risk than their peers for bullying, academic difficulties, substance use, and mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and suicide attempts, a spokesperson said.

Saturday’s event offers parents, grandparents, guardians, educators and any other caring adults the chance to discuss the challenges involved in making their LGBTQ+ youth more successful at home and in school.

“Our focus is on sharing stories, strategies and resources”, says Lyn Raymond, the parent of a gay son enrolled at the Claremont Middle School and a member of Rural Outright’s Program Committee.

“We organized this brunch because we believe no caregiver should have to struggle alone. Working together is a way we can help the LGBTQ+ kids we all care about.”

Rural Outright is a community program of TLC Family Resource Center providing support and advocacy for rural LGBTQ+ Granite Staters and their allies.
