Standout midfielder, Amelia Thomas opened the scoring followed by a goal by Tora Thurnley, which gave Hopkinton a 2-0 halftime lead. Thomas and Katie Meserve added second half goals to send the Hawks soaring into the final four. They will face Gilford in the semi-finals next week. Newport’s Kelsey Wheeler had 9 saves to anchor a tremendous defensive effort by Jenna Maheu, Kirsten Hurd and Kaylie Pennington. Newport says goodbye to their two outstanding senior captains Selena Coronis and Megan Howard. The Tigers future looks bright as they will return 14 sophomores, 2 juniors and 1 freshman from their 8-8 season.

Fall Mountain 3, Raymond 2

The Fall Mountain Girls rose to the occasion after allowing two easy goals early, one happening 1minute and 15 seconds into the game. The second goal for Raymond came 20 minutes into the second half where, like the first, came from the weak side. With 10 minutes left on the clock, Makenna Grillone found freshmen Avery Stewart, who found the net with a beautiful goal. 3 minutes later, a handball was called on the Raymond defense and Stewart was called to put it away, as she did with a nice crisp shot into the corner. Freshmen Stewart was not done, as she drove a 25-yard shot far-pole and into the top right-hand side of the cage. “She came to play… and play she did,” said FM coach Bruce Ferland. “Makeena Grillione was an active participant in the game and fed Avery several balls that the freshman superstar capitalized on.”  FM won 3-2, coming from an 0-2 hole.

BOYS SOCCER

Windsor 2, Springfield 1

Windsor defeated Springfield 2-1 at Brown Field in Springfield on Friday afternoon. The first half was an even affair with both teams creating a handful of chances but neither side was able to find a breakthrough leaving it a tie game at halftime. To start the second half, Windsor came out on the front foot, beginning to push some serious pressure towards the Springfield goal. The breakthrough came from Andrew Kelly-Jacobs, who took the ball up the left flank, cut back in on his right foot, and curled a shot into the top right corner from about 25 yards out. The second goal came from Hunter Grela who took it straight off a throw-in from Dylan Hodgdon and after a miscue from a Springfield defender, put it past the keeper to go up 2-0. Springfield got one back to cut the deficit in half, but keeper Eli Milligan (12 saves) and the backline was able to hold strong and see out the victory. “We came out here and did what we needed to do,” said Windsor coach Steven Mulloy. “We needed this victory to improve our seeding going into next week and this was exactly the result we wanted to take away. Andrew and Hunter were able to get the goals that we needed and defensively we showed a pretty high level of composure to withstand their late attempts to find an equalizer.”

Sunapee 4, Wilton-Lyndeborough 0

The Lakers finished the regular season on a good note with a win against Wilton.  Michael Mullen scored a hat-trick and Jackson Cooney scored as well. Mullen assisted on Cooney’s goal while Lane Smith had 2 assists. Justin Claus and Sean Moynihan shared duty in the net to earn the shutout. “This was a good test going into the playoffs,” said Lakers head coach Jack Iacopino. “We played well and kept the game under control although Wilton never quit and kept up the pressure.” With the win, Sunapee should end up seeded third in the playoffs. Their opponent has not been determined, but they do know that they will play Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
