GIRLS SOCCER
VT D-III: #6 Vergennes 3, #11 Windsor 1
Vergennes scored their first goal 10 minutes into the game, and a second one about 15 minutes later. The first girl was a shot from about 25 yards out that Windsor’s keeper thought was going wide but skipped in. The second was a scrum in front of the net because we Windsor failed to clear it well and Vergennes popped it in the back of the net. Halftime score was 2-0 and it stayed that way until about 15 minutes left in regulation, when a Vergennes goal was scored off a corner kick and the ball bounced around in the box a bit. The Yellow Jackets scored with 3 minutes left in regulation. Kristin Clark put a cross in that the keeper tried to clear, but bounced off a defender and in. Adi Prior ended up with 14 saves on 19 shots for Windsor. “We couldn’t take advantage of the limited opportunities we had tonight,” said Windsor head coach Jeff Bachey.
NH D-III: #5 Gilford 6, #12 Fall Mountain 1
From Tuesday, October 23: FM took the lead early with an assist from Avery Stewart and a sweet chop move by Makenna Gillione, followed by a beautiful shot in the upper left corner 23 minutes in. FM held the lead till an end-line cross from the corner flag at 35 minutes in curved into the back corner of the cage. “Nobody is stopping that, the odds for that to go in are tremendous,” said FM head coach Bruce Ferland. That brought the halftime score to 1-1. “Gilford is a very fast team… they have three new freshmen that are skilled and quick. Our attempt was to slow down there top scorer, #3, who is skilled, fast and hungry to score. When trying to match up with her or to slow her down I went to a freshman player who played JV this season. But I felt her hunger, speed and her ability to stay with the play would give us an edge. I believe even today, that it did, Ruby Frithsen did a great job.” 3 minutes into the second half, a 25 yard shot over the goalie brought the game 2-1, as FM was developing open lanes, but just not finishing things off. 20 minutes in players waiting for a dangerous play call that never came developed a 3rd goal for Gilford. At that point, it kind of broke the bridge and motivation, and energy was lost and never really returned to the cats’side of the field. Gilford went on to score on a PK, another misplayed ball, and finally a 30-yard shot over the top to end the game. “Overall I believe there were opportunities to put balls in the back of the net but it is been one of our weakness all season,” said Ferland. “To have success in the future it’s something we need to overcome and somehow develop in our younger players.”
