CLAREMONT — The City of Claremont has executed real estate tax liens against the owners of 336 properties for unpaid taxes dating back to 2017.

According to the list on file at the office of the Sullivan County Register of Deeds in Newport, those unpaid property taxes total $983,760.34. Added to that amount was $93,626.46 in interest charges and $9,315 for costs bringing the total amount to $1,086,701.80.

The individual liens indicate five owners of multiple properties are responsible for $250,504.88 of the total liens. Between them the five own 62 total properties affected by the liens. They range from 10 to 16 properties.

Liens filed against seven individual property owners with tax bills totaling more than $10,000 each that were unpaid from 2017 included amounts totaling $122,368.32

Paperwork for the tax levy of 2017 was executed on Sept. 24 at Claremont City Hall. Paperwork supporting those documents was filed on Oct. 5 at the office of the Sullivan County Register of Deeds.

Claremont Tax Collector Gwendolyn R. Melcher said the 2017 tax liens were “down a little bit” from the previous year.
