FOOTBALL

Somersworth 28, Kearsarge 27

SOMERSWORTH —Kearsarge lost a back-and-forth game at Somersworth 28-27 Oct. 19.

The game was tight all night as the two teams traded a touchdown in each quarter.

The Hilltoppers got the win on a Brogan Bonsaint quarterback sneak with 5:15 left in the game and a Christian Abkarian two-point conversion. Somersworth then stopped Kearsarge’s offense twice down the stretch to secure its fourth straight win and a spot in the Division III playoffs.

Abkarian was huge all night for Somersworth rushing 35 times for 163 yards and a five-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

The Hilltoppers also got touchdown runs of two yards in the first quarter and one yard in the second quarter from Matt McHugh, who also added a third quarter conversion run.

The loss came despite a phenomenal night from Kearsarge junior running back Gavin Magistro who picked up 170 yards on the ground on 22 carries and scored an early fourth quarter touchdown on a five-yard run.

Kearsarge led by scores of 7-6 after one quarter, 14-12 at the half and 21-20 after three quarters.

Jak Jallah was 7-for-12 passing for 149 yards and touchdown tosses of 41 yards to Noah Cooper in the first quarter, 30 yards to Andrew Normandin in the second quarter and four yards to Normandin in the third quarter. Cooper added extra points after all three touchdowns.

Kearsarge falls to 1-7 with the loss and will close the season hosting Monadnock Oct. 26 at 7 pm.

FIELD HOCKEY

Division III Quarterfinals

No. 2 Hopkinton 4, No. 10 Newport 0

CONTOOCOOK —Newport’s season ended in the Division III quarterfinals at Hopkinton 4-0 Oct. 19.

The Hawks, who beat the Tigers in the final game of the regular season 6-1, got a tougher game against Newport only leading 2-0 in an evenly played first half.

Amelia Thomas led the Hawks with a pair of goals and an assist.

The second-seeded Hawks improve to 13-2 with the win.

Newport closes its season at 8-8 which is a three-game improvement from the season before.

Division III Preliminary Round

No. 10 Newport 3, No. 7 Winnisquam 1

TILTON —Newport came from behind to beat Winnisquam 3-1 Oct. 16 at Tilton School in the Division III Preliminary Round.

The Bears took a 1-0 halftime lead on a Maddison House goal.

Maddie Miller scored a pair of goals in the second half on assists from Eliza Bates and Selena Coronis to put the Tigers ahead for good in the second half.

Lacey McNeel added an insurance goal on assists from Bates and Miller.

Kelsey Wheeler made seven saves in the cage to pick up the win for the Tigers.

Division III Preliminary Round

No. 5 Lebanon 1, No. 12 Stevens 0 OT

LEBANON —Stevens lost to Lebanon 1-0 Oct. 16 in overtime in the Division III preliminary round.

The game was scoreless through regulation with the Raiders scoring with 2:21 left in the extra session.

The two teams closed the regular season just three days prior by playing a scoreless tie.

Stevens closes its season at 6-7-2.

Division III Preliminary Round

No. 9 Berlin 2, No. 8 Kearsarge 1

NORTH SUTTON —Kearsarge’s season came to an early end with a loss in the opening round of the Division III tourney to visiting Berlin 2-1 Oct. 16.

Kearsarge took a 1-0 lead into halftime on an Audrey Kenyon goal.

The Mountaineers took over with two quick goals in the second half and held off the Cougars.

Kearsarge got solid play from Chase Lennon at forward, Kate Cochran and Eliza Cardillo at midfield and the duo of Jordan Pollard and Brier Roberts at defense.

GIRLS SOCCER

Stevens 3, Sunapee 0

SUNAPEE —Division III power Stevens picked up an impressive win over Division IV contender Sunapee 3-0 Oct. 19 at Alexander Field.

Stevens scored all three of its goals in the first half.

“In a lot of ways this is exactly what we needed prior to the tournament,” Sunapee girls soccer coach Myles Cooney said. “I think our practices will be stronger and our effort will be there next week when it really matters.”

The Cards picked up goals from Jenna Pond, Sydney Miller and Audrey Puksta.

Tanner Brown, Elle Grenier and Hannah Miller all added assists.

Kate Chambers got the shutout in goal for Stevens.

The Cards end the regular season at 13-3, while the Lakers end at 14-2.

Kearsarge 1, ConVal 0

NORTH SUTTON —Senior Night was a success for the Kearsarge girls soccer team with a thrilling win over ConVal 1-0 Oct. 19.

The Cougars scored on a feed from Jordan Busch to Elizabeth Greason. Busch beat a pair of ConVal defenders to get the ball to Greason for the goal.

Payten Hebert picked up the shutout in goal for Kearsarge.

The Cougars close the season at 9-5-2 and will play in the Division II tournament.

Stevens 6, Hillsboro-Deering 0

CLAREMONT —Stevens won in a rout over Hillsboro-Deering 6-0 Oct. 17 on Senior Night at Monadnock Park.

Sydney Miller and Audrey Puksta each scored a hat trick to lead the Cardinals.

Miller scored once in the first half and Puksta twice to give Stevens a 3-0 lead at the break over the Hillcats.

Sunapee 6, Moultonborough 0

SUNAPEE —Sunapee cruised to a win on Senior Night over Moultonborough 6-0 Oct. 17.

Marybeth Groton had a huge night with four goals, while Abigail Pollari added the other two for the Lakers.

Pollari and Silvia Dalton had helpers for Sunapee.

“We struggled with their trap,” Sunapee girls soccer coach Myles Cooney said. “We don’t see that a lot and it gave us some headaches and certainly disrupted our rhythm, not to mention the slick conditions on the field.” 

Kearsarge 5, Manchester West 1

MANCHESTER —Kearsarge picked up a win at Manchester West 5-1 Oct. 16.

Taryn Hubley led the Cougars with a goal and two assists.

Other scoring goals for Kearsarge were Emily Folcik, Jordan Busch, Kallee Selby and Kaylyn Storozuk.

Lili Baer and Emilie Webster added assists.

BOYS SOCCER

Sunapee 4, Wilton-Lyndeborough 1

SUNAPEE —Sunapee finished its regular season with a win over Wilton-Lyndeborough 4-1 Oct. 19.

Michael Mullen scored three times, while Jackson Cooney added another tally.

The duo of Justin Claus and Sean Moynihan posted the shutout in goal.

Mullen added an assist, while Lane Smith had a pair of helpers.

Sunapee ends the season at 13-3.

Sunapee 5, Moultonborough 1

SUNAPEE —The Sunapee Lakers hung tough early to beat Moultonborough 5-1 Oct. 17 at Alexander Field.

“Although we played a little sloppy at times we also did some nice things,” Sunapee boys soccer coach Jack Iacopino said. “We combined our passes at times creating some nice goals.”

The Lakers led 2-1 at the half on goals from Lane Smith and Jackson Cooney.

Parker Reed, Michael Mullen and Cooney all scored goals in the second half.
