SUNAPEE BOYS ESCAPE IN OT
The Lakers and Wilton Warriors went into overtime and the outcome was decided by a Lane Smith penalty kick 2 minutes into the first overtime period. Michael Mullen received a high pass from the flank and as he brought it down two Wilton defenders knocked him down in the penalty area. “Lane takes all our PK’s. He’s has been very dependable in that role,” said coach Jack Iacopino. “Today, cool as cucumber, he stepped up and placed the ball into the left side panel. A beautiful shot and an exciting victory for us.” Sunapee’s defense did a great job keeping a clean sheet. Goal keeper Justin Claus had a couple of great saves and Matthew Nangeroni and Joshua Heino were stellar as center backs. During regulation, Sunapee had the ball in Wilton’s end of the field the majority of the game. The Lakers put up 13 shots with 10 of them on goal. Late in the second half the ball danced on the Wilton goal line but the Lakers just couldn’t get a foot on it. The Lakers will play the two-seed, Littleton, Monday afternoon in the Semifinals. The game will be played at Laconia High School with the kickoff slated for 4:00 p.m.
STEVENS FOOTBALL FALLS ON THE ROAD
Stevens football wrapped up their regular season with a road loss at Hillsboro-Deering-Hopkinton, 21-0. HDH scored on their opening drive and the Stevens defense played well for the remainder of the first half. Late in the second half, Stevens tried a FG but had mishap on the snap, this coming after a long punt return by Lucas Mudge and the HDH defense making a stand in the red zone. HDH led 6-0 at the break. HDH scored on the opening possession in the second half as well. “They really shut down our running game and had a pair of interceptions,” said Stevens head coach Paul Silva. “I thought the kids played hard, the defense particularly. They are a very physical team. Quentin Bicknell, Phil Mason, and Isaiah Forrest did a good job on defense, making some nice tackles.” HDH scored another TD in the fourth. For Stevens, it looks like they will be the No. 7 seed in the D-III playoffs and will play at Campbell next Saturday.
