ACWORTH and CHARLESTOWN — William Richard Potter, age 86, of Concord passed away at home on Oct. 28, 2018 from esophageal cancer. Bill was born on July 14, 1932 in Acworth to Thomas and Dorothy (Philbrick) Potter.

Bill married his wife, Hildegard (Riedi) Potter of Zurich, Switzerland on May 15, 1954. He is survived by Hildegard, his son Thomas Potter and wife Cheryl Potter of Concord; Tony Potter of San Diego, California; his daughter-in-law Janis (Potter) O’Shanecy of Forest Grove, Oregon; grandchildren Nicholas Potter of Bedford, New York; Caitlin Potter of Concord; Christopher Potter of Portland, Oregon; and Sarah Potter of Corvallis, Oregon; great-grandchildren Myla, Owen; and Oaklen; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his oldest son Daniel Potter of Forest Grove, Oregon in 2001; his parents; and sister Mary Allen and brother Albert Potter, both of Charlestown.

Bill and Hildegard raised their family in Charlestown until moving to Concord in 1979. Bill was a proud veteran, having enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 and serving in Germany during the Korean War. He was employed as the superintendent of the Sullivan County House of Corrections in Unity and then as administrator of the Merrimack County Department of Corrections and Superintendent of the Merrimack County House of Corrections in Boscawen. Bill was active in local politics, serving as a selectman in Charlestown for many years and then on the Concord City Council for one term.

Bill was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and was most happy when surrounded by his family. Bill had a strong work ethic and enjoyed the outdoors, reading, gardening, poetry, ‘corny’ jokes, and telling stories of his childhood growing up in the small town of Acworth in the 1930s and ’40s.

There will be no calling hours. A service for family and family friends will be held on Monday Nov. 5 at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association Hospice.
