CHESTER, Vt. — At a special meeting held on the evening of Nov. 7, the Green Mountain Unified School District board approved an expenditure of $29,480 to be paid to the Ascutney-based Watts Up electrical contractor to repair a defective conduit at Chester-Andover Elementary School.

“They’ll take care of the work from the power pole to the building through the conduit,” said Two Rivers Supervisory Union Business Manager Cheryl Hammond.

Hammond added that exactly who will be paying the $29,480 is still being worked out.

“We’re still discussing that with the insurance company,” Hammond said. ‘[Facilities Manager] Jim Spaulding is working with the company.”

On Aug. 24 it was discovered that a failed flange had flooded the school’s boiler room with four feet of water. The consequent damage has required the school district to replace the boilers, and upgrade the water and electrical systems. Recently, tests revealed that one of the electrical conduits was defective. Work was halted and a different approach required.

The students, meanwhile, have been getting their lessons at Green Mountain Union High School. No date has been set for their return to Chester-Andover.
