This year, New Hampshire broadcasters gave award-winning coverage of the opioid epidemic, state championship sports, breaking news from severe weather and fun features focused on everyone from ice fishing enthusiasts to janitors. Local leaders from television and radio gathered to celebrate the best of the best at the 2018 Granite Mikes, presented by the New Hampshire Association of Broadcasters.
WYCU-TV won “Sports Play by Play” for the second year in a row for their coverage of the NHIAA Division III Boys Basketball Championship. This was preceded in 2017 for their coverage of the NHIAA Division 3 Championship. “These games may be the highlight of our yearly accomplishment,” said Gregory Uhrin, general manager and COO, “but they are just a small part of our weekly sports programming produced under our banner of ‘YCN, Your Local View!” YCN also produces Yankee Chronicle and Stark Reality along with many local specials including parades and concerts.
At this year’s Granite Mike Awards dozens of other stations were recognized, capped off by the award for Broadcaster of the Year, which went to WKBK radio broadcaster Dan Mitchell, for his work on and off the air. Individuals and stations submitted 261 entries in 20 categories. The work was judged by the Idaho Association of Broadcasters. WMUR TV was the big winner, taking several First-Place prizes and Merit Certificates. WGIR, WZID and WBNH radio also received numerous First Place awards. WMUR TV and WLKZ-FM were named the television and radio Stations of the Year, respectively.
