Crop Hunger Walk is a success

To the editor,

Newport is a community that rallies to support others, and this year’s Crop Walk is a testament to that community spirit. Twenty-five walkers and a half-dozen event volunteers came together to raise awareness and funds for hunger relief-around the globe, and here in our own community. Crop Hunger Walk supports Church World Service’s national and international hunger-relief projects as well as the Newport Food Pantry.

While we enjoyed a beautiful five-mile foliage walk along the Sugar River rail trail, we remembered why we were walking: to raise funds for people around the globe who are hungry and who have to walk many long miles for clean water, and also to support the Newport Food Pantry who every day helps our neighbors facing food insecurity. The New Hampshire Food Banks reports that 1 in 9 men, women and children are food insecure in New Hampshire, meaning they do not know where their next meal will come from.

This year’s walk was supported by four local faith communities: South Congregational Church, First Baptist Church, The Church of the Epiphany, and St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church. The Newport Recreation Department, who also had an event on the day of the Crop Hunger Walk, collected donations in support of the Newport Food Pantry, and McDonald’s of Newport donated a large cooler of ice water.

Newport’s Crop Hunger Walk raised over $2,200 this year and was successful because it brought people together for a common goal: ending hunger. Many thanks to all those who volunteered, collected pledges, walked or made a donation. As we move into the holiday season, may Crop Hunger Walk be a reminder of what we can each do — and what we can do as a community — when we come together to help others.
