To the editor,
The Claremont Historical Society article of November 13th (A Woolson family Thanksgiving, Claremont, 1830) was submitted to the Eagle Times just before my husband and I left on a nine-day Amtrak vacation. Although I had seen the article in print and admired the layout of the photos and text, I did not read it through carefully while we were traveling.
A careful reader sent me an email, pointing out an apparent typo. Now that we are home again, I had time to take another look at the article and noticed a second error. One mistake wouldn’t have required a comment, but since there were two, I will clarify.
My computer’s spellcheck has repeatedly “corrected” my spelling of Colin Sanborn’s last name, wanting to change it to Sunburn. I noticed this as I was writing earlier articles and wanted to give credit to Colin for his contribution to them. I very carefully corrected each auto-correct, but obviously missed this in my final edit of the Woolson article.
Error #2 was an incorrect caption under the photo of the brick house on Broad Street. The description in the article reads, “The young couple were boarding at the Samuel P. Fiske home, a large brick house on Broad Street, set back from the road. At the time, it was adjacent to the Fiske family property on the corner of Broad and Summer Streets.”
The brick house pictured was the Samuel P. Fiske home, where Hannah and Charles Jarvis Woolson boarded when they moved to Claremont in 1830. The yellow house on the corner of Broad and Summer, also known as the Samuel Fiske house, was owned by Samuel P. Fiske’s father. The caption identifying the brick house should have identified it as belonging to the Fiskes, not the Woolsons.
I’d also like to thank those who commented to me about each of the historical articles that have been printed since August. We appreciate knowing that they were read and enjoyed.
