Sugar River Valley FFA members, Victoria Burroughs, Fancy Moulton, Alexandra Armstrong and Myles Godsoe recently competed for national honors at the 91st National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, October 24-27. These students competed in the environmental natural resource career development event at the Granite State FFA Convention last spring. Only one team represents New Hampshire in this highly competitive event. This team represented their chapter, school, community and state in a professional manner and received individual bronze medals and a winning bronze plaque.
Environmental and natural resources is one of 25 career/leadership development event areas, covering jobs skills in everything from communications to mechanics. This event includes individual and team activities where participants complete interviews concerning global and national issues, complete writing exercises and locate strategic points using global positioning systems. Members also identify wildlife, plants and tools used in this field of study, complete soil tests, evaluate soil profiles, as well as conduct air and water analysis. This competition helps students develop the abilities to think critically, communicate clearly and perform effectively in a competitive job market.
FFA members and guests from across the U.S., representing all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, attended the event. Events took place at several venues in downtown Indianapolis and other surrounding areas. FFA members and advisors met in Bankers Life Fieldhouse, where eight of the nine general sessions were held. At the Indiana Convention Center, members explored the expo, attended a variety of workshops or participated in educational and career success tours.
This year, the theme of the convention and expo was “JUST ONE.” The convention and expo kicked off with the FFA band leading a grand march down Georgia Street in downtown Indianapolis. That evening, Garth Brooks took the stage for a private concert for convention attendees. The convention concluded during the ninth general session where President Donald J. Trump addressed the convention attendees.
