NEWPORT — Robert Arthur Putnam passed away peacefully with family by his side on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Robert was born Aug. 18, 1929 to Mildred and Arthur Putnam in Newport. At the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Army and served for 2½ years and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served for 20 years retiring in 1969 as a chief petty officer. Following his retirement from the military, he and his wife resided in Connecticut where he was employed with First National Stores as a dispatcher. In 1979 they moved to Lakeland, Florida where they have resided for the past 40 years. In Lakeland he was employed as a dispatcher with a trucking firm until his retirement in 1984. He enjoyed watching sports such as golf, tennis and football and loved being out in his yard gardening. He was an avid reader. He loved his life in Florida and loved the warm climate. He and Sandra traveled extensively after retirement. They visited 46 of our 50 states and went to several European countries as well as many of the Caribbean islands. His favorite spots were our beautiful national parks many of which they visited.
Robert is predeceased by his parents, Mildred and Arthur Putnam, and his brother, Roger Putnam. He is survived by his wife Sandra; his son Robert Putnam, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Virginia; daughter Daunn Putnam of Strongsville, Ohio; four grandchildren Autumn DeLuca (Chris) of Strongsville, Ohio; Lacy Ramsey (Chris) of Cleveland, Ohio; Ryan Orahoske (Stephanie) of Cleveland, Ohio; Natalie Mirabile of Ft. Collins, Colorado; six great grandchildren; and two sisters, Catherine Colson of Suffield, Connecticut and Marilyn Nedjoika of Enfield, Connecticut.
Visitation will be held at Phaneuf Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 172 King Street in Boscawen on Friday, Nov. 30, 2018 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A funeral service will immediately follow visitation, 11:30 a.m., at the funeral home. Interment prayers and military honors will be at the N.H. State Veterans Cemetery following services at 12:30 p.m.
