Christmas drawings start at Senior Center

By BRENDA BURNS

NEWPORT — We have a lot of helpful information to share with you this week. Sullivan County Nutrition Services kicked off the week starting to give away $2,000 as we begin the drawings for our annual 12 Days of Christmas. We will start off by giving away $100 per day next week.

Individuals can purchase raffle tickets for $5 each to be entered into the daily drawings. If a ticket is drawn, the ticket will go back in for a chance to win the remaining days. Tickets are always drawn in the dining room when lunch is served at 11:45 a.m.

The sponsors for this week’s drawings are Sugar River Bank, Hubert’s of West Lebanon and Bar Harbor Bank and Trust.

The Newport Senior Center has started its annual “Memory Tree of Lights” fundraiser. Elves will be at the Sugar River Bank and Bar Harbor Bank on Thursdays and Fridays to accept names. In addition, we have a special elf that will be at the NSC to accept names. We are looking for a few more elves to take names for a two-hour interval. If you have two hours to share, please contact Larry Eaton at 863-4422.

Sponsor a twinkling clear light in memory of a deceased loved one or to honor a living loved one. The lights will be shining brightly on the evergreen tree that will sit in the center of the gazebo in Newport, throughout the holiday season. Jan McMahon will organize all the names so that the names can run on NCTV as well. The cost is $3 per name or four names for $10.

The State of New Hampshire is making a statewide effort to understand the needs of older adults. It wants to learn from individuals, care takers, providers, family members or anyone what supports will be meaningful and relevant to older residents.

This information will assist the state in creating a State Plan on Aging. This plan is required in order to receive federal funding for the Older Americans Act programs such as, meals-on-wheels, congregate meals and other services that help older residents remain independent at home.

You will have an opportunity to share your opinion on what services you feel are important for healthy aging on Dec. 6, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Staff from Department of Health and Human Services will be here for the Listening Session to hear what you have to say. Light refreshments will be available.

As the holiday season is upon us, don’t forget to check out Alice’s Gift Shop located in the Newport Senior Center. The new gift shop is jammed pack with holiday décor, gifts, cards and even something for your friendly four-legged friends, all at affordable prices. Alice’s Gift Shop is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 1p.m.

The indoor walking path is now open. The walking path is available for use any time from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

SCNS Christmas Dinner will be held on Dec. 20th. Sign-up sheets are now out. Reserve your seat today!
