Weather Watch

Wet and heavy snow

Anyone waiting for snow sure got their wish last week when the area was blasted with heavy, wet snow. Anyone snowplowing or shoveling found out rather quickly just how heavy that snow was. It was impressive.

There wasn’t much sunshine along the way either. The forecast for the past weekend, Saturday night into Sunday, called for a smattering of everything from rain, freezing rain, sleet, and some snow. When Sunday morning arrived there was a light rain falling and a slushy mixture on the ground and vehicles. Most roads, however, had been treated and were in good condition.

While the daytime temperature will warm up to nearly 50 degrees at midweek a fresh cold front was expected to breeze into the area with morning lows struggling to reach 15 degrees.

As of Dec. 1, total snowfall for the winter season stood at 10.3 inches. Mount Escapee opened for the season last week so all that snow definitely helped those crews as they prepared trails for skiing.

With all that snow on the surface, the ground has yet to freeze. And that makes it a challenge for Newport Recreation Center volunteers to even think about flooding the Common skating rink.
